About the Museum
About the Museum.
As already mentioned on our home page we are celebrating an anniversary this year. In 2007 the Privat Radiomusem Bocket has been in operation for 10 years. Its been a long road that was not always easy. There have been many hurdles.
But lets begin where I left off on the home page. (.... and Dad was allowed to keep the Grundig radio, which was the beginning of today's collection ....) So, this one Grundig radio was the beginning of what is today the Loewe Opta Radiomuseum. But what actually started it?! Well, I really do not have an answer to this. It just happened that to this Grundig there came another radio and another and another, and all of a sudden we realized that we had about a 100 sets! But how did we come to specialize on Loewe Opta? Well, it turned out that most of our radios happened to be Loewe Opta, and we also found out that in my original hometown - Düsseldorf - at one time there had been a specialized manufacturing plant by Loewe Opta.
So, I decided to concentrate on collecting Loewe Opta sets. I found out that it is so totally engaging collecting just one brand if one really puts ones heart into it. Looking after other brands also would have become a distraction.
In time we acquired more and more Loewe Opta sets and the ones of other labels that we received were used for trading or even given away.
It so happens that in the town where I live there is a Hobbyists Fair every year. One day I was asked if I would be interested to exhibit some of the sets from my collection. This naturally brought with it that people from the surrounding area found out about my hobby, and more radios came to the collection.

This is a photo taken at one of these exhibitions.

All the activities at the exhibitions then caught the attention of the news media as you can see from some of the following pictures. By that time the collection had grown to 150 sets.
The pictures can be enlarged by stretching them.
Newspapers and radio reports gave us even more exposure and yet more people brought us their radios. Unfortunately I was not able to keep all of them since in the meantime I had already specialized on Loewe Opta.
And, that was not all of it. Newspapers and Radio came to see us often because what had been created here is unique, not the Radiomuseum in itself - there are many now - but who else can document that extensively the life of a brand name?!

Taping of a radio broadcast
This taping of a radio session, during which several radio collectors of the district of Heinsberg participated was broadcast on the 9th of September 1997. The duration of the broadcast was from 8:00PM to 10:00PM.
With all that the Radiomuseum Bocket made itself a good name, and it has become known in many countries. I do believe that in its character it is unique because of its specialization on one brand - namely Loewe Opta.
By 2007 Television had visited the Radiomuseum twice.
But, as they say, I was not satisfied with that. In about 1996 - some 11 years ago - I joined GFGF (the Society of the Friends of the History of Radio). There I accepted the position of trademark specialist for Loewe Opta sets and dial glass and backs for some firms.
Everything grew - with the help of my good friend Hardy Miersch - to the point that today the data base of the Radiomuseum Bocket contains as many as 17,000 schematics and manuals.
Dear Visitor, I cannot tell you about all that can be seen and read her. I would be very happy if one day you might pay us a personal visit at the Radiomuseum Bocket.
Since in the meantime I am on pension I can be reached just about anytime.
At the Museum entry is free and a free cup of coffee is always available.
